*IMPORTANT: High School Students Only*

This 20 week course allows students to expand their knowledge of animation and digital art. The class covers drawing, painting, animation and media arts. Students learn drawing and painting techniques, and how to draw from a model, animate, put together an art portfolio and create artwork on computers through the use of the Adobe Creative Cloud and Dragonframe. The program culminates in a public exhibition and screening of the artwork produced by the students. Students will get to create online portfolios and archives of their digital work and will come away knowing how to take a story idea through the stages of development into an animated piece. Filmmaking equipment and supplies will be provided. Lunch is not provided.

Note: At least some drawing and animation experience is encouraged.

*Portfolio submission REQUIRED*
Portfolio instructions: Please send up to 5 images (as .jpg's) or animated pieces (as .mov's, .mp4's, or vimeo/youtube links) to cap.animation.hs@gmail.com by Thursday, September 14th at 11:59pm. Only applicants that send in portfolio pieces will be considered for admission. If you have questions about the portfolio requirements or program logistics, please email capfilm@calarts.edu. Applicants will be notified by the teaching team if they have a spot in the program by Monday, September 18th. 

CAP Creative Writing @ Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory

In this 20 week class students will learn a variety of creative writing techniques and genres, including poetry, essay/nonfiction writing, and spoken word. All materials will be provided.

CAP Hip Hop Music Video Workshop @ Dorsey High School

CAP Hip Hop Music Video @ Dorsey High School teaches students the history and techniques of rapping, beat-making, sampling, breakdancing, and lyric-writing in order to create music and choreography for their own music videos. The class culminates in a video screening and live performance of music and dance.

This program offers 20 weeks of instruction for middle and high school students (6-12 grade, ages 11-18). Classes include theory, composition, sound recording and engineering, vocal ensemble, percussion, strings ensemble, chamber ensemble, jazz ensemble, and more. The program culminates with semester-end recitals performed in CalArts' premiere music pavilion, The Wild Beast. For students ages 11–18.

*REQUIRED in-person class sign up from 12PM – 1PM on the first day of class, October 14. A parent/guardian signature will be required at class sign up.*

CAP Music @ Plaza de la Raza

This program provides 20 weeks of instrumental instruction in guitar, bass, drumset, flute, saxophone, voice, piano, songwriting, electronic music, music theory, or composition, as well as several music ensembles, including salsa band, chamber ensemble and rock band. The workshops culminate in a recital at Plaza de la Raza. For students ages 11–18.

*A parent/guardian must be present on the first day of class (October 11) for in-person sign up*

This 20-week program offers private lessons in piano and voice. Students learn the basics of music, although all levels of experience are welcome. The program culminates in a public piano recital held at the Watts Towers Arts Center in the spring. Lessons offered between 3PM–7PM on Wednesdays and 10AM–3PM on Saturdays. (Individual lesson times will be scheduled with the instructor once the program starts.)

In this 20-week program for high school youth, students explore a mashup of disciplines while focusing on specific social issues. Participants may choose to collaborate with others in the class, or work independently to develop their own way of self-expression and make creative choices within the visual arts. Media includes but is not limited to various forms of printmaking, stop-motion animation, and digital video production.

Calendar Feb 17, 2018 at 1 pm, runs for 10 weeks

Saturdays 1PM – 5PM @ CalArts

This program offers 10 weeks of instruction for high school students (10 - 12 grade, ages 15-18). 

Students work closely with instructors to learn the core elements of 35mm photography, while investigating notions of self-expression and community through their photographic work. Presentations about the history and art of photography are offered throughout the semester. The students’ original works are exhibited at CalArts and other venues throughout Los Angeles.
